July 6th in History

-1777 British forces captured Fort Ticonderoga during the American Revolution.
(give yourself a handful of bonus points if you know - without looking it up - where Ft. Ticonderoga is located - hint, this is an historic flag from the same colony and era)

-1854 The first official meeting of the Republican Party took place in Jackson, Mich.

-1923 The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was formed; below is the flag adopted at the time

It is an interesting bit of history that both of these flags are connected with revolutions; and both of the flags identified with the country of the revolt were red, white and blue; and the subsequent national flags later again used the colors red white and blue. Like the flag with the word Liberty above, the earlier Soviet flag also relied on script, in this case Cyrillic script, instead of a symbol.
